This study investigates design guidelines for efficient shape presentation in VR/MR using a compact, multi-point pneumatic haptic interface placed on the fingertip during active exploration. Experiments comparing 1, 3, and 5-point configurations revealed that identification accuracy does not improve monotonically, peaking at 65.6% in the 3-point condition, possibly reflecting cognitive load and pressure constraints. However, increasing stimulus points contributed to an improvement in exploration efficiency―reducing the mean response time from 48.88s to 46.33s―and markedly enhanced subjective “ease of understanding” (from 4.44 to 6.19). These findings suggest that while more actuators may not directly boost objective precision, they provide additional tactile cues that accelerate shape prediction and increase user confidence. This research offers preliminary design implications for developing high-usability haptic interfaces that balance hardware miniaturization with effective information delivery.
