We consider the pickup and delivery problem with item loading platform assignment (PDP-ILPA) in the context of automated guided vehicle (AGV) routing. Each AGV is equipped with multiple loading platforms arranged linearly from front to back. For the PDP-ILPA, we first propose a set packing model capable of finding an optimal solution given sufficient computation time. However, in our real-world application, the PDP-ILPA solver is embedded within an AGV control system and must obtain a solution within a strict one-second time constraint. To meet this requirement, we further propose two constructive methods with distinct platform assignment rules: One method loads items onto the nearest available platform, while the other applies a rectangular packing model for platform assignment. Computational experiments show that the constructive method based on rectangular packing obtains efficient pickup-and-delivery plans while adhering to the one-second time limit. |
