A causal relationship is not a physical reality but a cognitive one and there is no predetermined mechanical system behind it. When we examine a innovation process under the above perspective, we can see that it consists of three phases: generation, evaluation and focusing. Focusing attention to promising candidates or properties in preparation for the next generation is the most essential part of innovation.
