A self-modifying code changes its appearance when it is executed. However a typical embedded microcontroller prohibits a code from changing the contents of the instruction memory during execution. To apply the self-modification based tamper-resistance enhancement methods for codes to be executed on such an embedded microcontroller this paper develops a \"simulation\" technique. The output code consists of an \"interpreter\" part to be located in the instruction memory and an \"intermediate code\" part to be located in the data memory.
