In the proposed method we simultaneously estimate (1) the vertex depths of a triangular mesh drawn on a reference image and (2) the camera ego-motion between the two frames, by minimizing a cost function composed with SSD (Sum of Squared Differences) values computed from mesh-involved pixel values on the four images and spatial smoothness constraints. We formulate the cost function in an ICIA (Inverse Compositional Image Alignment) manner for reducing the computational costs, and use a hierarchical meshing approach for robust estimation. We apply the proposed method to surface tracking and progressive surface reconstruction.
