The key technique in such methods is the free path sampling, which is used for determining the distance (free path) between successive scattering events. In our previous work, we proposed an unbiased and adaptive free path sampling method14),15) and the sampling efficiency was significantly improved over existing methods. The key concept of that method is to partition the spatial domain according to the spatial variation of the mean free path of the medium and to sample the free path in an adaptive manner. Thus, the space partitioning scheme is important for the sampling efficiency.
