It is, however, well-known that any noise reduction algorithm unavoidably produces speech distortion and residual noise. Here, the critical issue is that the characteristics of these undesired byproducts vary according to the noise reduction algorithm used and the type of noise to be reduced. It is therefore essential to establish methods that can be used to evaluate the quality of noise-reduced speech.
