Generally  buffer management takes advantage of access locality. However  it is anticipated that database access has little locality. Therefore  database buffer management should be somewhat different from that of virtual memory systems. In this paper  at first  the measurement results on real database access environment are described. Then  the results are analyzed and characteristics for database access behavior are extracted. The examined characteristics suggest that  it is not efficient to give databases large buffer spaces in addition the buffer size should be determined according to individual application program access patterns. Following this fact  a new database buffer management method is proposed  which determines the buffer size given to individual program depending on each program access behavior. By the proposed method  I/O device access frequency can be limitted or lowered to a low value using small database buffer space as compared to a conventional method. The I/O frequency reduction leads to a great performance improvement even if the degree of reduction is small  because the access time gap between I/O device and main-memory is great.
