The symbol ∇ is significant differential operator which relates the scalar field to the vector field. In general, however, the etymological root of "nabla" is not known sufficiently. Therefore we make clear the etymology of symbol ∇ used for the gradient, and trace the history of the symbol form the viewpoint of linguitics.},
