, While "two heads may be better than one," just as often "too many cooks spoil the stew." Groups do not always decide more wisely than do individuals. This point has been made most cogently by Janis (1972, 1982) in his analysis of defective decision making by group at high levels of government in America. He called this type of decision process Groupthink. The present paper describes Groupthink and reviews the relevant social psychological literature. It notes that most studies examine the phenomenon within an "information-processing" paradigm and points out the pitfalls of this approach. Finally, it suggests that a "meaning-making" approach may be a more useful way to explain Groupthink.},
