The first part reviews enumerative classification systems, such as DDC, EC, LCC, NDC, etc., oied in livraaries as ameans to give relative location in shelf order. The next part explains development of analytico-synthetic classification systems, such as UDC, BC, CC, etc., worked out to cope with compound subjects of documents. The last part presents some probemls of existing livrary classification systems and points out the needs of reconstruction, to meet the online environment.},
