The example of controlling the emphasis level of a text-to-speech synthesizer is given. Preference experiments extract the characteristics of various keyword emphasis methods, and the results confirm that the emphasis level can be controlled by varying several physical speech parameters. Speech editing experiments performed with an interactive speech editor are used to extract the relation between emphasis level and physical speech parameters.
