Even if the network speed increases, the last-one-mile problem is expected to remain by the expanding demand for bandwidth. In order to share and effectively utilize limited resource, dynamic QoS mediation is necessary. Dynamic adaptation and flexibility is the key in the system design. In this paper, we propose VoR system, a network subsystem framework for VBR continuous media transmission. With the help by QoS coordinator middleware, the scheduler in the network driver multiplexes continuous media streams with QoS specification. VoR also provides a mechanism for application programs to inspect and interact with the underlying network subsystem. We have implemented the proposed subsystem on RT-Mach OS and ATM.
