This study investigated the neural representation of subjective vertical altered by visual reference frames using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a custom wide-view stimulation system. Participants observed a square frame oriented clockwise, counterclockwise, or upright. During fMRI scanning, participants fixated on a rod presented at the center of the frame. While no significant adaptation was observed for the rod orientation, attenuation of BOLD signals was found in several brain regions associated with self-motion perception and visuomotor coordination in response to frame orientation.
