Our research group has been studying a virtual examination environment that minimizes cheating opportunities through the use of nontransparent head-mounted display (HMD). While HMD makes cheating difficult by physically restricting the examinee's field of vision, it also complicates the answer input process. Therefore, in this study, we propose a new input method called Iterative Multiple-Choice Method for fill-in-the-blank questions. This method uses joypads as input device and enables us to efficiently input words composed of kanji and kana. Moreover, this method forces examineess to select correct choices iteratively to prevent answering a correct answer by chance. We developed a prototype examination environment with the method, and compared input performance with grid-based character input method. Our method was 28 % superior in terms of characters per second on average.
