The present study examined the characteristics of Japanese smartphone game users and the association between gaming preference and personality traits. We collected smartphone gaming habits data, including gaming time and genre, from 709 participants by delivering an online questionnaire. For personality traits, we delivered a self-reported test accessing the Big Five model in the same questionnaire. Generalized Anxiety Disorder scores and tests of Autism-Spectrum-Quotient and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder were collected. We found that extraversion and neuroticism were both affected by genres. Relationships between some of personality traits and smartphone genres were found significant. There was significant difference in score of extraversion, conscientiousness, and neuroticism between genres. We found significant differences in gaming habits between participants with and without probable ADHD symptoms, and between the level of anxiety. This study's solid evidence of the relationship between personality and smartphone games is helpful for the groundwork for future research. |
