With the increasing number of connected devices in smart homes, ensuring compatibility and interoperability is becoming increasingly critical. To address this issue, two protocols have been introduced: Matter and ECHONET Lite. While Matter is gaining significant attention globally as the future protocol for smart homes, ECHONET Lite has a long history of development and adoption in the smart home industry in Japan. In this paper, a comprehensive analysis is presented that compares Matter and ECHONET Lite in terms of their architecture, and features, as well as highlights both their similarities and differences. The main contribution of this paper is the proposal, discussion, and implementation of a bridge solution that enables ECHONET Lite devices to interoperate with Matter devices, addressing the compatibility and interoperability issue in smart homes in Japan. |
