In this paper, we propose and develop a hands-on learning material for a unit on “properties of sound” in junior high school science class. By using the proposed learning material, we aim to promote understanding of the relationship between the amplitude and frequency of waves, and the loudness and the pitch of sound. Students shake the material at their arm swing width and swing speed of their own choosing. The material functions by being held in the hand and shaken. Then, our material displays waveform in response to the shaking, and outputs sounds corresponding to the main amplitude and frequency of the shaking. The device displays waveforms in response to the shaking, and outputs sounds corresponding to the main amplitude and frequency of the shaking. Students are expected to discover the relationship between the amplitude and frequency of the swing, and the loudness and pitch of the sound by repeatedly checking the waveforms and the sound output from our material in response to themselves' swinging motion. In this paper, we first describe the design and implementation of this learning material.
