We are witnessing an unprecedented increasing demand for battery-free energy-free sensing. This makes today’s wearable devices infeasible in the future. This is due to the associated power consumption of inertial activity sensors which limits the battery lifetime. In this paper, we propose solar based step detection system, which uses solar cells simultaneously as a step counting sensor as well as an energy source. Our key observation is that the power available from a foot-mounted solar cell changes dynamically while a person moves, encoding information about the underlying walking process. |
