recent years, distributed storage systems, in which general-purpose servers (hereafter referred to as “nodes”) are connected to a network to form a cluster of inexpensive storage compute, have become popular. The main failure components of distributed storage systems are drives and nodes. Therefore, to evaluate the reliability of distributed storage systems, it is necessary to consider two types of failures: drive failures and node failures, as well as their combined failures. However, no reliability model that considers both drive and node failures has been developed so far. This paper proposes a reliability model and evaluation equation to analyze the impact of both drive and node failures on system reliability. In addition, the reliability of distributed storage systems depends on the policies of redundancy, repair methods, and data placement methods.
