Their songs have complex and precise acoustic structures that are enjoyable to human listeners. It is amazing that birds attain such behavior with their small basilar papilla which is only 10% or less than human basilar membrane. In this talk, I will present basic psychophysical and acoustical characteristics of avian hearing and vocalizations and discuss how this remarkable specialization of auditory mediated behavior becomes possible in birds.
