Motivation of the research comes from a simple question: ‘how to properly appreciate a painting.’ The essence to that is to recognize the focal point, which represents the subject of an artwork, and the leading lines, which guide audiences' sights towards the focal point. A focal point is an outstanding part of a painting, pending on position, color, and other conditions. A leading line is a linear object of a painting. This publication is about the methods of detecting these though image processing techniques. The research aims at eventually developing a system that fully supports the users to appreciate masterpieces.
