This allows the mixing of participants who speak as the main way of communicating and those who prefer to use only text. However, in the case where an individual decides to communicate only through text using pre-existing tools for remote conversations, it is difficult to actively contribute in discussions with others that communicate verbally. There is also the possibility of the non-verbal participants experiencing feelings of alienation and hesitation to make their thoughts known. We propose a new system named ConvivialChat which would provide a way for participants to have equal and complementary discussions with each other. This is made possible through built-in functions such as the reading of text by a synthesized voice, voiced reaction button, and a function to turn voiced remarks into text which would be written into the chat log. Experiments conducted showed the potential for individuals who exclusively use chat to readily join in conversations with ConvivialChat. The results also showed the effects for one function, in particular the feature that turns speech into text, did not align with the original purpose of its design.
