Hot/cold tiered storage systems achieve low power consumption and low monetary cost by storing some data to cold storages, of which price per data unit is lower than that of hot storages. One of their drawbacks is slow data access speeds of cold storages. This is a very large problem for video-on-demand services since long interruption times of video playbacks occur when clients do not receive each video data segment by the time to play it. However, conventional hot/cold tiered storage systems are designed for general services and lack a chance to further reduce total playback interruption times for video-on-demand services. In this paper, we design a novel data access method for video-on-demand services using hot/cold tiered storage systems. In our method, each video file is divided into some video file segments so that the clients can finish receiving subsequent segments while playing received segments.
