In such systems, receivers are installed on ceilings or walls to capture identifiers broadcast by nearby BLE beacons, and user locations are estimated based on received signal strength and related data. Because users only need to carry a distributed BLE beacon, the burden on them is minimal, making this approach suitable for a wide range of applications. However, since BLE beacons continuously transmit fixed identifiers, they pose significant privacy concerns. In this study, we propose, develop, and evaluate PrivBeacon, a portable BLE beacon and identification system that prevents unauthorized third-party tracking by periodically and randomly updating its identifier while allowing recognition only by specific systems. The PrivBeacon integrates a microcomputer and a battery on a single board, and its casing was fabricated using a 3D printer. To accommodate different user preferences for portability, two physical design variations were created.
