Accordingly, teachers are required to design learning activities that connect the information literacy skills and foundational knowledge learned in “Informatics I” to familiar real-world phenomena, and that foster improvement through trial and error informed by data collection and analysis. In addition, while programming education in “Informatics I” tends to focus on correct syntax and expected program behavior, real-world programming often involves unavoidable errors and unintended conditions, making data-driven adjustments necessary. In this study, we designed a problem-solving learning activity for 11th-grade science-track students using an educational robot equipped with a distance sensor, in which students program the robot to stop at a specified position. We conducted a prototype practice to promote iterative improvement of the robot based on the PPDAC statistical inquiry process. Pre- and post-questionnaires suggested that collaboration, a sense of achievement, and interest were high; however, some groups spent too much time on planning and implementation, took longer to reach the data collection phase, and were unable to secure enough trials, which in turn hindered improvements in accuracy.
