In network tomography, the estimation unit is typically a link; however, when AS segments are used as the estimation unit, several challenges arise. Specifically, while the value of each AS segment that constitutes diverse end-to-end paths must be uniquely determined, it is difficult to represent the delay of an AS segment as a single value due to diverse routing within an AS, making the measurement granularity too coarse. On the other hand, by refining the measurement granularity and dividing segments in both space and time, one can obtain more accurate delay distributions for segments, but the amount of data decreases, leading to lower estimation accuracy.
