These devices maintain a Preferred Network List (PNL) of previously connected Wi-Fi networks to facilitate automatic reconnection. PNL may contain privacy-sensitive information that can be used to infer user attributes and behavioral history. Although PNL is intended to remain accessible only to the device owner, prior studies have shown that third parties can obtain PNL information by exploiting unauthenticated (and typically unencrypted) management frames and by deploying spoofed access points (APs). In this study, we propose a proactive privacy protection mechanism that employs PNL obfuscation to prevent unauthorized data collection.
