messaging tools such as email and chat systems, emojis are used as non-verbal cues to communicate emotions. Face-like emojis are particularly effective for expressing emotions directly, and decorative parts such as tears and hearts increase the intensity of these expressions. In this study, we propose a system that enables rich emotional expression by allowing on-the-fly customization of these decorative parts to reflect the subtle nuances of the message. Specifically, we propose customizable emojis that can change the number and size of decorative parts in a few levels, and gesture input methods for quickly specifying the customization levels on touchscreens. The results of two user experiments show that changing the number and size of decorative parts on the fly is both expressive and visible in conveying emotional intensity, and has the potential to create a unique communication between sender and receiver.
