Some social network services (SNSs) offer an antemortem option to decide the treatment of postmortem accounts. Retained profiles allow a form of continued communication with the deceased, and they support grieving among the bereaved. However, the privacy of the deceased with respect to their online accounts is not protected by comprehensive laws or terms of service. Intentions of deceased and bereaved are not always similar so that it is necessary to develop guidelines for the treatment of postmortem accounts. We conducted an online survey in Japan, the United States, and France to examine intention of user themselves about how they wished their SNS accounts to be handled after death or not.
