A compact bulk-current sensor senses abnormal transient bulk current caused by laser irradiation on a silicon substrate. The single sensor size is only 286 F2/Cell and it is distributed across the entire cryptographic core. After attack detection, a flush code eraser switches the core supply path to quickly erase internal data. A test chip mounted 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) was designed and fabricated in 0:18 μm standard CMOS.
