Existing methods require stereo cameras or the preparation of a large amount of learning data to generate an accurate face model. With the aim of solving these problems, we propose a novel face model, called the variable-intensity template, which can be generated with very little time and effort. The variable-intensity template consists of a face shape model, a set of discrete interest points defined in the vicinity of facial parts, and an intensity model which describes how the intensity of interest points vary with different facial expressions. By using this model in the framework of a particle filter, our method is capable of estimating facial poses and expressions simultaneously. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.
