Since enhancement causes their explosive data increase, it requires high efficiency video coding. In this situation, H.265 / HEVC which can double the data compression rate compared to H.264 / AVC was finalized. However this standard requires huge amount of computational complexity to select the best PU from many candidates. Therefore we propose a fast PU mode selection method utilizing variance characteristic of luminance samples. We implemented the proposed method to HM-10.0, and evaluated its effectiveness.
