Receiver-initiated MAC protocols are promising protocols for wireless sensor networks due to their energy efficiencies. This paper proposes a method to schedule beacon transmissions for receiver-initiated MAC protocols to improve data collection delay. The proposed method divides a beacon period into slots. Each sensor node selects a slot to send beacon in distributed manner so that their beacon timing are sorted in descending order of their distances (i.e. hop counts) from the sink node. In addition, in order to avoid collisions, each node adjusts its beacon timing within the selected slot. Computer simulations show that the proposed method can collect data in a shorter time with less energy consumption than conventional receiver-initiated MAC protocols. |
