However, current WSN technology cannot achieve it as long as each sensor node is driven by a general AA or a lithium button battery. Thus, we need to replace batteries periodically, where it is expected to reduce the replacing cost to a practical level. In this paper, we improve a receiver initiated MAC protocol called RC-MAC to make possible to maintain a sensor network for 10-years long with practical cost. In the proposed method, based on the discovery that leaf nodes in the delivery tree require to receive no data frame, we extend RC-MAC to prolong the lifetime of the leaf nodes to more than 10 years.
