Though the VI Architecturespecification aims for platform independence, the current Intel VIProvider Library (VIPL) design favors systems with Intel architectureprocessors running the Windows operating system (OS). Design problemsinclude the endianness of key data types, and insufficientconsideration of OS features, such as \\texttt{fork} and signal, that are partof systems supporting the POSIX standard. We highlight key issues, andpropose solutions. The issues discussed in this paper are activelyaddressed in an industry-wide collaboration effort to enhance andstandardize the next version of the VIPL specification.Further, we have produced a high-performance VI Architecture systemfor SPARC UNIX cluster systems connected with Fujitsu's Synfinity-0System Area Network. Our VI Architecture system will be used as acommunication substrate for parallel databases such as Oracle OPS, andSymfoWARE, as well as CORBA ORB middleware systems. We discuss issuesthat arise in a VI Architecture system that aims to support suchapplications.Finally we present key features of our design, and provide a detailedperformance analysis of our system.
