• 論文抄録 / 内容記述: 筆者らは分散勤務の長期的継続に際してその発生が指摘されている，{}「勤務者自身の組織や社会からの疎外感，1人で勤務することに関する漠然とした不安や孤立感」などの解決を目的として，メディア空間の一種である「e-office」を開発した．{}「e-office」では映像表示部の近傍にメッセージ通信機能の表示部を配置したが，その意図は各ユーザがその機能を用いて自身の行動予定や連絡先などを他のユーザへ通知することによりユーザ間において電話やEメールによるコミュニケーションの機会を増やすことであった．しかしながらテスト運用においては，メッセージ通信機能自体がインフォーマルコミュニケーションを行う「場」となり，この「場」において様々な性格のコミュニケーションが観察された．そこで筆者らはメッセージのログを記録して内容を分析したところ，分散勤務者間において強いインフォーマルコミュニケーションニーズ（欲求）があること，それは電話やEメールでの伝達が困難な内容であること，およびe-officeシステムがその伝達に適しているらしきことを確認し，メディア空間とメッセージ通信システムとの統合による新たなアプリケーション領域の可能性を見いだした．さらに追加実験により，映像通信の有無がこのインフォーマルコミュニケーション量に影響を与えていることを再確認した．

• 論文抄録(英) / 内容記述: The authors have developed the ``e-office'', a Media Space system for distributed workers, to solve the problem including the sense of isolation, alienation or anxiety in general which are said to be crucial barrier to perform the long-term distributed working. The ``e-office'' provides the shared text messages that are displayed near video snapshots of other workers. The intent of authors was to let a group of distant workers use this message function to exchange his/her schedule with other workers so that they easily know the adequate timing to commence communication via phone call or E-mail to their co-workers, and communication between them may increase. However,during an in-house experiment we found that workers use a text message function to facilitate an informal communication, and the display area of message communication became the ``place'' to put various types of messages. After we were aware of this fact, we started to record a message log and analyzed its contents. As a result, we have discovered that for a group of distant workers there is a strong need of informal communication of which nature is not possibly transmitted via telephone call and/or E-mail, but our system corresponds with this hidden communication need.
