Since most of unearthed Mokkans have been stained, damaged, and degraded, it is extremely difficult even for experts to extract characters from badly blurred or missing ink on Mokkans. We realized a binarization function based on discriminant analysis to extract ink from background. Then, we have developed a character recognition function, which outputs candidates for partially missing patterns when a user augments missing ink. We made also a graphical user interface which invokes the above functions, provides experts with suggestions and stimulates their inference.
