<datacite:description descriptionType="Other">In education for the blind, tactile maps with raised lines have been used. We introduced district maps made of puzzle pieces to blind students and adults and received comments on the advantage of puzzle pieces over raised-line drawings in comprehending the shapes of the districts. To investigate this phenomenon, we conducted an experiment in which shapes of prefectures of Japan were presented to the sighted subjects in two conditions: raised-line drawing and puzzle piece. Under both conditions, the prefectures were discriminated at high correct rates (over 90%). However, the mean response time for raised-line drawings was three times as long as that for puzzle pieces. In addition, the response times for raised-line drawings varied greatly among the participants. The features of the shapes that were used as basis of discrimination by most participants were the existence, locations, and shapes of the projections along with sizes and outlines of the shapes. These features were common in both conditions. To conceive these features, the participants traced along the raised lines with fingers for the raised-line drawings, whereas they could pinch the projections for puzzle pieces. This difference in haptic exploration produced the difference in response time. The results of the present experiment suggests the effectiveness of map puzzle pieces as educational materials in the education for the blind.</datacite:description>
