Radio frequency (RF) fingerprinting is a promising technique that utilizes unique hardware imperfections to authenti- cate transmitters. One of the key problems of RF fingerprinting is to obtain real training data and build a practical authentication system. However, previous works suffer from insufficient datasets, limited device homogeneity, and inadequate experimental details. To address these issues, we conducted a comprehensive experimental study on an RF fingerprinting-based authentication system using the IEEE 802.11g standard. We first establish a data set from 123 wireless transmitters of the same model, which presents fine-grained differences that pose greater challenges to the authentication system. Then we provide detailed methodolo- gies for data collection, feature extraction, and correlation analysis to enhance the reproducibility of the proposed system. Finally, the experimental results demonstrate the potential of RF fingerprinting to improve security performance in scenarios with a large number of highly consistent devices. |
