The internet, smartphones, and applications such as Uber and Lyft collectively enable convenient and efficient transportation. However, rural areas in Ghana that lack proper internet accessibility and literacy still face the challenge in operating smartphones. The unstructured supplementary service data protocol (USSD) is a feature of GSM cell phones, namely a protocol used to communicate with the mobile network operator's computers. In Ghana, owing to the popularity of “Mobile Money” Services, use of the USSD protocol is common practice in the daily lives of people. We propose to employ USSD with the waterfall model to provide transportation services. Introducing a transportation service that takes advantage of a tool that is widely used is highly beneficial as it allows for easy integration. Improving transportation in these rural areas would significantly improve the distribution of agricultural produce, improve tourism, and open these areas to more investment and opportunities. |
