In an active classroom, L2 assessment is often a challenging issue, since everyone in the crowded classroom can be a noise source to any others, and L2 speech will be recorded with high noise. In this study, throat microphones are introduced for this issue, which record speech (throat speech) as vibration of the skin of the throat without air-conducted noise but with a poor speech quality. This is because the skin vibration totally loses the higher band energy. In this paper, we proposed a novel method that improves the quality of the throat speech based on artifacts reduction and bandwidth extension, and we applied the method to robust assessment of L2 listening, where learners' shadowing speech is used for L2 listening assessment. |
