In Software-Defined Networking (SDN), the control plane is constituted by a logically centralized controller. This centralization of the control logic is a huge risk in case of network failures. ResilientFlow was proposed as a mechanism to restore the controller-switch connection in case of link failures, but is not able to recover from a controller failure. Natural disasters are a very serious problem in this regard, since an earthquake or tornado can greatly damage the communications infrastructure. With this as motivation we propose the Controller Migration and Recovery Module, which works together with ResilientFlow, that can dynamically migrate the controller within the network, based on disaster forecasts. Our proposal is also able to recover the control plane in case of a complete controller failure, by distributedly electing a new controller among the available network devices. |
