We focus on shape recovery of flat rooftops that are parallel to the ground. The method starts by slicing the point set into Layers, which are sets of points at almost the same height level. After generating the layers, each layer is divided into Clusters, which are sets of points gathered together on a level plane. Each rooftop shape is recovered from each Cluster generated in the final process. We find suitably Layers for 3D building models based on the MDL (Minimum Description Length) principle balancing between simplicity of the models and conformity of the 3D points to the models. To estimate the viability of our method, we obtained 3D points from aerial image sequences in dense urban areas, and recovered building models using our method. Experimental results showed that our method could extract building shapes from urban scenes and achieved a high recovery success ratio (the highest is 68.8%) in the wide range of standard deviation σ d assuming that heights of 3D points in each Cluster obey Normal Distribution whose standard deviation is σ d . Compared with a recovery rate of a non-MDL method, it became clear that the MDL criterion improved the ratio. The experimental results we obtained showed that our point-based method was effective in enabling the recovery of buildings in urban areas.AA11560603情報処理学会論文誌コンピュータビジョンとイメージメディア(CVIM)44SIG09(CVIM7)64742003-07-151882-78102009-06-30
